RSVP 55+ will conduct its annual Lots of Socks drive Tuesday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 31. Watch for drop boxes in libraries, churches and banks in every Greene County town.
The Lots of Socks drive aims to collect new socks and underwear for needy children in the county. “Families can get by with second hand clothes, but used socks and underwear are harder to find,” said Tori Riley, a member of the RSVP advisory council. “Besides, it’s hard to feel good about yourself when you’ve got holes in your socks.”
In past years, the socks and underwear have been channeled through school nurses. This year, all items will be distributed by New Opportunities. Families who participate in the winter outerwear distribution and/or the Christmas food basket distribution will be eligible to receive Lots of Socks items if there is a need.
Persons who would prefer to donate cash can do so through their church, earmarked for Lots of Socks. Cash received is used to supplement sizes where necessary.
The Lots of Socks collection originated as a Make a Difference Day project. This year, Make a Difference Day is Oct. 25.
